Talmud 300 – 399 are self-study courses whose grades are based solely on the final examination. The course of study that is necessary to be prepared for the final examination consists of lessons based on the readings noted in this syllabus. Students should read the entire text of all the reading assignments. There are no formal assignments, but students are encouraged to take the practice quizzes associated with the readings to ensure that they have gleaned the appropriate knowledge to fulfill the course objectives and are well prepared for the final exam.

This course explores Talmudic texts focusing on dialogue, concepts, and structure as well the derivation of Rabbinic and Torah law. In addition, the commentaries of Rashi and Tosafos are examined and analyzed with regards to interpretation of Talmudic text and dialogue and the derivation of novel concepts and laws.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the dialogue in a given section of Talmud
  • Analyze the goals of statements in the dialogue
  • Analyze the premises underlying statements in Talmudic dialogue.
  • Demonstrate a broad and in-depth knowledge of the lawful and ethical concepts found in the Talmud and its classic medieval commentaries
  • Apply analytical skills in to explain Talmudic interpretations
  • Follow Talmudic argumentation leading to lawful conclusions and resolutions Analyze Rashi and Tosafos to explain the underlying assumptions and consequences of the legal principles implicit in the text
  • Resolve apparent difficulties in the text according to the commentaries and explain the proofs of Talmudic exegesis of the Bible

Babylonian Talmud – One Chapter

The student’s final grade will be based on a final examination. Examination questions will cover all topics covered in the readings. Students will have two hours to complete the final examination. Students will be assigned a number grade from 0-100. A letter grade will also be issued in accordance with the following scale:

90-100 – A
80-89 – B
70-79 – C
0-69 – non passing
