MAN – 330 International Management is a self-study course whose grade is based solely on the final examination. This course of study that is necessary to be prepared for the final examination consists of eleven lessons based on the readings from the textbook. Students should read the entire text of all the reading assignments. There are no formal homework assignments, but students are encouraged to answer all the review questions at the end of each Lesson to ensure that they have understood the relevant course material are well prepared for the final exam.

Course Description:
The course covers the global business context, with an assessment of political, economic, legal and technological factors. It looks at managing cultural interdependence, with a consideration of issues of corporate social responsibility, ethics, and sustainability. It deals with the role of culture and communicating across cultures. Negotiating and decision making is dealt with as well as how to formulate and implement strategy. International human resource issues are discussed with respect to motivating and leading across cultures.

Learning Outcomes:

Lesson 2 – Managing Interdependence: Social Responsibility, Ethics, Sustainability

In this lesson, the students examine the social responsibility of corporations toward their various constituencies around the world and, in particular, their responsibilities toward human rights. The students acknowledge the strategic role that ethics must play in global management and provide guidance to managers to maintain ethical behavior amid the varying standards and practices around the world. The students recognize the importance of managing interdependence and include sustainability and shared value in their long-term plans.

Lesson 3 – Studying the Role of Culture

In this lesson, the students look at how culture affects all aspects of international management. The students distinguish among the major dimensions that define cultural differences in societies and groups. The students look at the interaction between culture and the use of the Internet. The students develop a working cultural profile typical of many people within a certain society as an aid to anticipating attitudes toward work, negotiations, etc. The students gain some insight into different management styles around the world

In this lesson, the students examine the communication process and how cultural differences can cause noise in that process. The students appreciate the cultural variables that affect communication for both the sender and the listener. The students become aware of the impact of IT on cross-border communications.

Lesson 7: Implementing Strategy: Strategic Alliances, Small Businesses, Emerging Economy Firms

In this lesson, the students become familiar with the types of strategic alliances for international business, the challenges in implementing them, and guidelines for success in alliances. The students study what is involved in implementing strategies, including those for small businesses and those involved in emerging economies. The students consider how to manage the firm’s performance in international joint ventures, with attention to knowledge management, government and cultural influence, role of e-commerce.

Lesson 8: Organization Structure and Control Systems

In this lesson, the students study the importance of appropriate organizational structures to effective s strategy implementation. The students become familiar with the types of organizational designs suitable for the level and scope of internationalization of the firm. The students study the role of technology in the evolution of the networked structure and to appreciate the role of teams in achieving business goals. The students realize how organizational design affects the manager’s job, for example, on the level and location of decision making. The students emphasize the role of control and monitoring systems suitable for specific situations and locations in the firm’s international operations.

Lesson 9: Staffing, Training, and Compensation for Global Operations
Read Chapter 9

In this lesson, the students study the strategic importance to the firm of the IHRM function and its various responsibilities. The students learn about the major staffing options for global operations and the factors involved in those choices. The students emphasize the need for managing the performance of expatriates through careful selection, training, and compensation. The students learn about the role of host country managers and the need for their training and appropriate compensation packages

Lesson 10: Developing a Global Management Cadre

In this lesson, the students appreciate the importance of international assignments in developing top managers with global experience and perspectives. The students recognize the need to design programs for the careful preparation, adaptation, and repatriation of the expatriate and any accompanying family, as well as programs for career management and retention, thereby also transferring knowledge to and from host operations. The students become familiar with the use of global management teams to coordinate host country and cross-border business

Lesson 11: Motivating and Leading

In this lesson, the students learn about the complexity and the variables involved in cross-cultural motivation and leadership. The students learn how to use the research on cultural dimensions as tools to study how to motivate people in different cultural contexts. The students become familiar with the global leader’s role and environment and what makes a successful global leader. The students study the research on leadership and how leadership styles and practices vary around the world. The students study the variables that necessitate contingency leadership such as culture, context, people, and situations

The student’s final grade will be based on a final examination. Examination questions will cover all topics covered in the readings. Students will have two hours to complete the final examination.  Students will be assigned a number grade from 0-100. A letter grade will also be issued in accordance with the following scale:

90-100 – A
80-89 – B
70-79 – C
0-69 – non passing
