MAN 101 Principles of Management

MAN – 101 Principles of Management is a self-study course whose grade is based solely on the final examination. This course of study that is necessary to be prepared for the final examination consists of eighteen lessons based on the readings from the textbook. Students should read the entire text of all of the reading assignments. There are no formal homework assignments, but students are encouraged to answer all the review questions at the end of each Lesson to ensure that they have understood the relevant course material are well prepared for the final exam.

Course Description:
This course is an introduction to the function of management and the context in which organizations operate. The course examines international management, environmental concerns, ethics, the role of technology, managing diversity, and business strategy and service quality. Focus will also include job analysis, personnel selection, individual differences, motivation and training, the role of perceptions and attributions, and the management of productivity. It will examine the theory and fundamental concepts of management including planning, organization, leadership, and control. This class will review the evolution of management thought, function and practice and will stress current approaches and emerging concepts.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Explain basic management concepts, especially processes for goal setting, strategy, motivating, reinforcement principles, and employee selection and compensation.
  • Describe the skills needed at the various levels of management.
  • Analyze and evaluate organizational performance.
  • Describe current human resources principles.
  • Utilize managerial solutions for contemporary organizational issues.

The student’s final grade will be based on a final examination. Examination questions will cover all topics covered in the readings. Students will have two hours to complete the final examination.  Students will be assigned a number grade from 0-100. A letter grade will also be issued in accordance with the following scale:

90-100 – A
80-89 – B
70-79 – C
0-69 – non passing

Lesson 1: Managers in the Workplace
Read Chapter 1

In this lesson the students examine how the field of study called management has evolved. The students explore the many elements that make up the different approaches to management. Focus on the following learning objectives as you read and study this chapter. Describe some early management examples. The students explain the various theories in the classical approach and learn about the development and uses of the behavioral approach. The students look at the quantitative approach and explain the various theories in the contemporary approach.

In this lesson the students describe the eight steps in the decision-making process. The students explain the four ways managers make change. The students classify decisions and decision-making conditions. The students describe different decision-making styles and learn about how biases affect decision making. The students identify different effective decision-making techniques.

Lesson 3: Managing the External Environment and the Organization’s Culture

In this lesson the students contrast ethnocentric, polycentric, and geocentric attitudes toward global business. The students learn about the importance of regional trading alliances and global trade mechanisms. The students describe the structures and techniques organizations use as they go international. In this lesson the students define the nature and purposes of planning. The students classify the types of goals organizations might have and the plans they use. The students compare and contrast approaches to goal-setting and planning. The students learn about contemporary issues in planning.

In this lesson the students define strategic management and explain why it’s important. The students explain what managers do during the six steps of the strategic management process. In this lesson the students describe six key elements in organizational design. The students contrast mechanistic and organic structures. The students learn about the contingency factors that favor either the mechanistic model or the organic model of organizational design. The students describe traditional organizational designs.
