JST 201 Principles of Jewish Blessings

JST 201 is a self-study course whose grade is based solely on the final examination. The course of study that is necessary to be prepared for the final examination consists of lessons based on the readings noted in this syllabus. Students should read the entire text of all the reading assignments. There are no formal assignments, but students are encouraged to take the practice quizzes associated with the readings to ensure that they have gleaned the appropriate knowledge to fulfill the course objectives and are well prepared for the final exam.

This course explores the fundamental Jewish practices and customs concerning blessings. Topics include: structure of a blessing, blessings made in vain, amen, discharging the obligation of others, initial blessings, sequence of blessings, principle vs. subsidiary items, what is considered staples – mezonos, blessings on fruits and vegetables, wine, vegetable and fruit soups, the general blessing of Shehakol.

Course Description:
This course focuses on the fundamentals of managerial accounting. Emphasis is on accounting for a manufacturing concern, budgeting, planning, management decision making, and analysis of financial reports. Topics also include cost behavior and control, product cost accumulation and pricing, and responsibility accounting.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Express knowledge and demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts related to blessings.
  • Identify, explain, analyze, interpret, and apply the theories they have learned the area of Jewish Blessings
  • Analyze the underlying premises of the principle laws and customs involved in blessings.
  • Discuss the theory and reasoning underlying the practical application of blessings and apply them to novel situations.
  • Identify and derive the major principles of blessings when analyzing particular situations regarding blessings.
  • Identify the sources and reasoning at the foundation of the laws and customs of blessings.

The student’s final grade will be based on a final examination. Examination questions will cover all topics covered in the readings. Students will have two hours to complete the final examination.  Students will be assigned a number grade from 0-100. A letter grade will also be issued in accordance with the following scale:

90-100 – A
80-89 – B
70-79 – C
0-69 – non passing

All quizzes are optional to prepare you for final exam. Only the score on your exam will appear on your transcript.
