CIS 315 Management Information Systems

CIS– 315 Management Information Systems is a self-study course whose grade is based solely on the final examination. This course of study that is necessary to be prepared for the final examination consists of fifteen lessons based on the readings from the textbook. Students should read the entire text of all the reading assignments. There are no formal homework assignments, but students are encouraged to answer all the review questions at the end of each chapter to ensure that they have understood the relevant course material are well prepared for the final exam.

Course Description:

This course is designed to familiarize students with the concepts related to the utilization of information technology in business organizations. It will focus both on technical and managerial aspects of information technology adoption in the organization. Topics such as information technology infrastructure, electronic commerce, information systems and business strategy, ethical issues related to information systems will be covered.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Recognize basic information system concepts as applied to business operations and management.
  • Identify the major components of a computer system, including hardware, software, operating systems and operating environments as they apply to information systems.
  • Evaluate, select, and use computer-based information systems from a management perspective.

  • Design and develop basic MIS applications such as spreadsheet, database, and web development.

  • Analyze business processes and their relationship to information systems.
  • Assess the impact of information systems on the success of organizations.

In this lesson the students examine technology and the digital firm. The students look at new business models and value propositions. The students explore the different categories of electronic commerce including customer-centered retailing, business-to-business electronic commerce, and new efficiencies. The students look at the newly emerging electronic commerce payment systems. The students learn about how intranets support electronic business and examine intranet applications for electronic business. The students look at four different types of systems and how each system relates to the other systems. The students examine the systems from the functional perspectives of sales and marketing and manufacturing and production. The students look at product life cycle management systems with respect to faster products and faster processes. The students also examine the most up to date IT finance and accounting systems and human resources systems. The students learn about integrating functions and business processes in terms of business processes and information systems and systems for enterprise-wide process integration.

The students look at economic impacts as well as organizational and behavioral impacts. The students examine the impact of the internet on organizations. The students look at different models of decision making and the implications for the design and understanding of information systems. The students explore information systems and business strategy and look at the value chain model. The students examine firm-level strategy and information technology as well as industry-level strategy and information systems. The students look at IT with respect to competitive forces and network economics.

In this lesson the students learn about the ethical and social issues related to systems. The students explore the moral dimensions of the information age and examine technology trends that raise ethical issues. The students learn about ethics in an information society in terms of responsibility, accountability, and liability. The students learn about professional codes of conduct and look at some real-world ethical dilemmas. The students explore the moral dimensions of information systems including information rights, privacy and freedom in the internet age, property rights, intellectual property, accountability, liability, and control system quality.

The students examine computer hardware platforms, operating system platforms, and enterprise software applications, as well as data management and storage. The students look at networking and telecommunications platforms and internet platforms, as well as consulting and system integration services. The students learn about contemporary hardware platform trends and the emerging mobile digital platform. The students look into grid computing, virtualization, cloud computing, green computing. The students also look at autonomic computing, high-performance and power-saving processors. The students learn about contemporary software platform trends such as Linux and open source software. The students look at the database approach to data management and database management systems. The students examine the capabilities of database management systems and how databases are designed. We look at knowledge work systems in terms of knowledge workers and knowledge work. The students learn about the requirements of knowledge work systems and give examples of knowledge work systems and intelligent techniques. The students learn about expert systems and organizational intelligence. The students examine fuzzy logic systems, neural networks, and genetic algorithms.

Lesson 12: Enhancing Decision Making

In this lesson the students look at decision making and information systems. The students learn about the business value of improved decision making. The students examine different types of decisions and the decision-making process. The students learn about how managers make decisions in the real world and high-velocity automated decision making. The students look at the business intelligence environment and learn about business intelligence in the enterprise. The students look at business intelligence in terms of analytics capabilities and management strategies for developing BI and BA capabilities. The students explore business intelligence constituencies and decision support for operational and middle management. The students look at decision support for senior management in terms of the balanced scorecard. The students learn about enterprise performance management methods and group decision-support systems (GDSS).

Lesson 13: Building Information Systems

In this lesson the students define systems as “planned organizational change”. The students examine systems development in terms of organizational change and business process redesign. The students look at the development process in terms of modeling and designing systems and learn about structured and object-oriented methodologies. The students also look at alternative systems building approaches such as using the traditional systems life cycle, prototyping, and end-user development. The students look at building application software packages and the role of outsourcing. The students learn about application development for the digital firm using rapid application development (RAD) in terms of component-based development and web services.

In this lesson the students learn about the importance of project management with respect to runaway projects and system failure. The students outline project management objectives and learn about the process of selecting projects. The students learn about management structure for information systems projects and how to link systems projects to the business plan. The students look at the critical success factors and the use of portfolio analysis and scoring models. The students learn about the business value of information systems in terms of cost and benefits. The students look at real options pricing models and learn about the limitations of financial models. The students learn about managing project risk the dimensions of project risk and risk management.

Lesson 15: Managing Global Systems

In this lesson the students learn about the growth of international information systems and international information systems architecture. The students learn about the global environment in terms of business drivers and the state of the art. The students learn about organizing international information systems using global strategies and business organization. The students examine business reorganization with respect to global systems and strategy. The students look at technology issues and opportunities for global value chains. The students look at computing platforms and systems integration. The students learn about connectivity and software localization.

The student’s final grade will be based on a final examination. Examination questions will cover all topics covered in the readings. Students will have two hours to complete the final examination.  Students will be assigned a number grade from 0-100. A letter grade will also be issued in accordance with the following scale:

90-100 – A
80-89 – B
70-79 – C
0-69 – non passing
